Accelerator Centre nationally recognized for contributing to sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada

WATERLOO, Ont. The Accelerator Centre’s specialized cleantech programming has been nationally recognized, winning a Canada Clean50 Top Project Award today at the Clean50 Summit 9.0 in Toronto.

The award recognizes the top 20 sustainability-orientated projects completed in Canada in the last two years. All project winners demonstrate outstanding contributions to sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada.

The Accelerator Centre, an award-winning startup accelerator based in Waterloo Region that is dedicated to building and scaling sustainable, globally competitive companies, received a Top Project Award for its TD Sustainable Future Program. Building on its globally acclaimed The Accelerator Program®, the TD Sustainable Future Program is themed programming to support entrepreneurs working on cleantech and smart cities initiatives, consisting of curriculum-based programming, mentorship from in-house mentors as well as specialized cleantech specialists, funding opportunities, and office space.

“Globally, cleantech is growing, but Canada is losing ground: In an eight-year period, Canada’s share of cleantech exports dropped—representing nearly $9 billion in lost opportunities. Our latest specialized accelerator, the TD Sustainable Future Program, leverages our track record of building globally competitive companies and was created based on a clear need to clean, support, strengthen, and future-proof the Canadian economy.” -John Stevens, project lead and VP, Strategy and External Relations at the Accelerator Centre.

With the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, a cleantech pilot program launched in 2017 with four client companies. TD Bank Group partnered with the program through The Ready Commitment in 2018, creating TD Sustainable Future Lab, Ontario’s only incubation space dedicated to sustainable solutions and the clean economy. Located in evolv1, Canada’s first zero-carbon and net positive office building, it is the country’s greenest innovation hub.

The cleantech accelerator has worked with 19 companies and has generated 114 jobs to date.

“Delta’s criteria in determining project awards is to carefully consider a combination of actual measurable impact, demonstrated innovation and the project’s ability to inspire others to imitate it. The cleantech accelerator created by the Accelerator Centre and TD Bank Group is a terrific example.” -Gavin Pitchford, CEO, Delta Management Group.

The TD Sustainable Future Program is accepting new clients.
