What does it take to build a smart lighting control solution that is flexible enough to be used in greenhouses, commercial spaces, and in industrial lighting solutions? It takes engineering expertise from two University of Waterloo graduates, killer business instincts, and the support of expert, specialized mentors along that way.

Founded in 2015, Nebula Controls (formerly known as Horizon Engineering Solutions) set out to create a data driven, AI based automation solution for greenhouses, grow ops, and vertical farms for growers across the world. The system enables greenhouse growers to use smart wireless lighting controls for HPS lights without the need for any major lighting upgrades.

From Engineers to Entrepreneurs

Since joining The Accelerator Program™ in late 2015 (and subsequently the ACs specialized clean tech programming, the TD Sustainable Future Program, in 2017), Nebula has been able to take their idea and grow quickly; becoming leaders in this space.

“Being engineers, we knew how to create an automated control system that worked, but I remember being laughed out of business meetings because we (as engineers) think and communicate in a specific way.

It was the mentorship within the AC that allowed us to break out of that, to be molded and to grow as entrepreneurs. We have had incredible growth as leaders and business owners because of the mentors at the AC and the level of confidence we have now going into important meetings is entirely different today.

We owe a lot of our growth to them during such a pivotal time in our business growth.”

– Hari Krithivasa, Co-Founder, Nebula Controls

Nebula has been recognized as one of the regions fasted growing, most impactful clean technology startups. Their record includes being named the Most Innovative Company in Waterloo by MP Bardish Chagger and being recognized by former Governor General David Johnson for Energy Efficiency and Advanced AI Technology.

Currently, the team services 1,600 greenhouses and has 15 team members.

Marking Another First with Graduation from the TD Sustainable Future Program

Alongside their list of accolades, Nebula also has the distinction of being the first graduate from the AC’s clean tech accelerator program. The program, which is the region’s only dedicated program and facility for clean tech entrepreneurs, launched in 2017. It is operated in partnership with the AC and funded by TD Bank’s corporate responsibility program, The Ready Commitment, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

“Our clean tech offering, the TD Sustainable Future Program, is off to a great start with the graduation of Nebula Controls,” says AC CEO, Dr. Paul Salvini. “We’re inspired by the potential that the clean tech sector has to make significant impact on not only the economy but on our local community and beyond.”

Scaling up

After graduation, Nebula plans to continue their growth by breaking into other indoor growth industries to provide similar solutions. This will make the movement of businesses towards further sustainable growth operations and control management more accessible and easier to implement.
