AC Statement: Ontario Focuses on Innovation

The prioritized recommendation mirrors the Accelerator Centre’s long held belief that IP protection strategy is a fundamental and mandatory component of enabling companies to successfully scale and compete globally.

February 12, 2020

Building globally competitive companies means protecting intellectual property (IP) for the benefit of Ontario and Canada. Hours ago, the government of Ontario received the Intellectual Property in Ontario’s Innovation Ecosystem report, providing the province with recommendations to protect home-grown innovation to maximize economic growth.

The report, delivered by the province’s Expert Panel on Intellectual Property led by Jim Balsillie, seeks to improve the innovation outcomes of Ontario’s economy by recommending strategies for improved generation and commercialization of research and intellectual property. Acknowledging that IP and data are the world’s most valuable business and national security assets, the report advises that the Ontario government creates a mandatory curriculum to teach publicly funded entrepreneurs and researchers how to develop and license intellectual property.

The prioritized recommendation mirrors the Accelerator Centre’s long held belief that IP protection strategy is a fundamental and mandatory component of enabling companies to successfully scale and compete globally. Our flagship offering, The Accelerator Program®, includes the creation and strategic protection and promotion of IP, allowing our clients to grow internationally (with 100% of companies maintaining at least one Canadian location). We are proud to see the importance that our organization places on IP reflected in our provincial government’s priority areas.

We recognize the crucial work of the Expert Panel and the provincial government for its attention to this important matter. The Accelerator Centre looks forward to working with the province to find new ways to enhance the impact we can have for the people of Ontario, including sharing our practices with other innovation hubs to ensure that the recommendations of the report are adopted.

Together, we will help ensure that Ontario is prepared for the digital transformation of the economy.
