Sober Steering Sensors has received $1.46 million in federal government funding to develop a new mechanism touted as capable of drastically reducing drunk driving, and creating hundreds jobs.
Dennis Bellehumeur, Founder and CEO of Sober Steering Sensors, has been involved for 20 years in brain injury rehabilitation and who sits on several boards related to alcoholism and traumatic brain injuries, and said it was this work that led him to develop the device, which fits invisibly into a steering wheel and uses transdermal sensors to detect alcohol levels through the driver's hands. If the alcohol exceeds the legal limit, the car's transmission locked and the vehicle immobilized.
