Normally I wouldn't be thrilled of being asked to be at the Accelerator Centre on a weekend, BUT this past Saturday was definitely an exception. Our staff and Board of Directors were invited to attend a special reception, and nobody complained. Why? Because Canada's Governor General David Johnston had agreed to stop by for an hour while he was in Waterloo and allow us to show our appreciation for all that he has done.

I first met Mr. Johnston at a large reception about four years ago, while he was still the President of the University of Waterloo. He stopped by to talk to my brother Tim, whom he knew very well, and chatted with me briefly. I have since heard His Excellency speak at many events, as have many people in our Region, and he is truly an inspiring speaker and very humble.

On Saturday, the Governor General arrived at the Accelerator Centre and was welcomed by many people he has known for years. As he went around the room catching up with people, he stopped in front of me and shook my hand. I said "Hello Sir, my name is…" and before I could finish, he said "Andrew, I remember. How are things here at the Centre." I don't tell you this because I think I'm memorable; in fact, I have been forgotten by many people in less honourable positions than the Governor General.  I tell you this because it shows the character of a person I have talked to for less than a total of five minutes on maybe three occasions. When you are talking with Mr. Johnston, you are the most important person in the room; he listens to what you have to say and cares about what you are saying.

We were all thrilled to have the opportunity to thank David Johnston - he was the driving force behind the Research & Technology Park and the Accelerator Centre. We have a plaque commemorating his contribution in our lobby (photo below), and we presented him with a symbolic piece of art crafted by Ruth Abernethy (photo below).

If you ever have the chance to meet the Governor General, think carefully about what you say; he will always remember it.
